Original product description:

Simple, fully enclosed insect and critter protection with a tub-floor. The floor clips in to your tarp's corners while the netting is suspended off your face by clipping it to points above.

Available with either a chest zip across the front or a ridge zip (+$10) down most of the length. The chest zip is a little lighter and allows easier entry from the front. The ridge zip allows easier entry from the side, above (when there's no tarp), or diagonally from the front. The ridge zip will open to either side depending on how you thread your rigging through the provided attachment points.

Offered in two sizes and two lengths which partner well with our Cirriform tarps, tapered tarps, rectangular tarps, and many other a-frame style tarps.

You may wish to seam seal the corners of the tub-floor. It shouldn't be necessary for most situations, but may be helpful should you find water pooling on the ground. The bivy is also available with a DCF floor which does not need sealing.

Made in the USA from imported materials.

Original product description:

Our lightweight Bug Bivys are available with three zipper styles and two sizes to help you dial in your tarping setup. The width and height of the Bug Bivy is tapered for efficiency, and the tub helps provide extra splash protection.

The bivy is best used under a tarp with the points above the head and foot suspended off of you. Create a tub-floor by clipping the top corners of the floor to your tarp using the included rigging. If you prefer to keep things simpler, just let the bivy drape over you, maybe suspending the front apex to keep the netting off of your face.

Which zip is right for me?
  • Chest Zip: Entry from the front. Best suited for a-frame tarps, especially smaller ones. Lightest option.
  • Ridge Zip: Entry from the side/above. Best suited for tarp pitches that allow better access from the side or from the top. Mid-weight option.
  • Y-Zip: Entry from the front, side, diagonal, or above. Unzips all the way to the front corners which improves access. Well suited for most tarps. Heaviest option. Best bivy for pairing with our Cirriform Tarp, by far.

Please note that the bivy is also available with a DCF floor which does not need sealing, and as a Wind Bivy for additional wind and splash protection.

Partners well with most a-frame style tarps, including:

Set-up & use:

The tub-floor is intended to be suspended from its top corners by clipping them out to your tarp's corners using the included rigging. Suspend the upper off or your face and feet by clipping it to points above. For more info and recommendations on how to install the rigging, please see the "Rigging" tab.

You may wish to seam seal the corners of the tub-floor. It shouldn't be necessary for most situations, but may be helpful should you find water pooling on the ground around you.

For simpler set-up when pitched without a tarp, consider using the Stand-alone rigging kit which allows the bivy to be pitch with only 4 stakes and your poles. For more information, please see the link.

To get started

Included: Rigging (shock cord, mitten hooks, and cord locks) is included with the bivy. See the Specs for exactly what the bivy comes with.

You'll want to attach rigging to 6 to 7 locations on the bivy: top corners of the tub (4), apexes (2), middle of ridge (1)(optional on Ridge & Y-zip).

To determine the length of the cords: Lay the bivy under your pitched tarp. Then, measure the distance from the bivy's corner to the tarp's associated corner. Cut the shock cord to that length (the two front lengths should be equal, as should the two lengths at the foot).

To install the cords:

You don’t need to follow our method, but this is how we like to do it.

At the corners

  1. Tie a loop on one end of the shock cord. We like to use a simple overhand loop knot.
  2. Using a clinch knot, tie on a mitten hook to the other end of the cord.
  3. Attach the loop end of the cord to the tub with a girth hitch.

At the apexes

  1. Tie a loop on one end of the shock cord using an overhand loop knot.
  2. Pass the free end of the cord through a cord lock.
  3. Pass the free end of the cord through the small webbing loop at the apex.
  4. Using a clinch knot, tie on a mitten hook to the free end of the cord.
  5. NOTE: On the Ridge & Y-zip, webbing loops are found on both sides of the zipper at the front apex. Pass the cord through the loop on the side opposite the side you'd like to bivy to open towards.

Optional on the Ridge and Y-zip bivys

  1. Repeat the process used for the apex lines at the middle of the bivy's ridge.

Stand-alone rigging kit:

For pitching the bivy on its own, we also offer a stand-alone rigging kit. This lightweight kit allows you to pitch the bivy with your poles and just four stakes. Please see the rigging kit's page for more information and instructions.

Product Availability

Unless otherwise stated, if the item is available to add to your cart, then it is in-stock and available to ship. Please see the shipping tab for expected fulfillment times.

If the item is marked as "sold out" or "available to backorder" then please refer to the production calendar and the FAQ below for more information.

Q: Why is so much stuff sold out?!

A: Our capacity is very limited, and we can't make products nearly quickly enough to meet demand. We only sell what I have in-stock, and don't typically take backorders. I know this can make it hard for you to plan, but in the longer term, it should help us to grow and to serve you better in the long term. See the last question for more info about this.

Q: When can I expect the item I'm interested in to become available?

A: For most items, please refer to the production calendar at the bottom of this page. This calendar shows when I expect to work on more substantial products. For some accessory products, production may not always be scheduled in advance and availability may be unpredictable.

FYI: If you do not see the item that you are interested in, then I do not know when it may become available (I don't have a private schedule beyond what's shown!).

Q: Can I pre-order, back-order, or reserve an item?

A: I'm afraid not. Out of fairness to everyone, I don't make special arrangements to reserve products. On rare occasions, I may open a product up for back-ordering to everyone (or a new product for pre-ordering). When this happens, it's made available to order on the website. If you are signed up for the stock notification, you will receive a notice that the item is available to order.

Q: Can you let me know when the item becomes available?

A: Yes. On the product page, enter your email address in the space provided to be automatically notified when inventory becomes available. If you don't see where you can do this, please let me know; sometimes there's a fluke in the settings and the field doesn't show. Please note that the email notification could get filtered out as spam. You can try to 'whitelist' info@yamamountaingear.com to make sure the email comes through.

Q: Why do you do things this way, and what are you doing to improve the situation?

A: For years I followed the more common back-order model, basically making everything to order. This approach made it challenging to increase production, limited time available to design new products or refine existing ones, impacted my personal/outdoor time, and meant long waits to get your gear delivered. I changed my approach when I moved to Montana in 2019. Offering only what's already made allows me to work and plan more efficiently, and opens up hiring opportunities.

NOTES ON USING THE CALENDAR

- For products shown on the calendar, you can typically expect the item to be made available towards the end, or soon after the period shown on the calendar. Sometimes, however, some items may be listed earlier in the period. For example, if the calendar shows that I'm working on tapered tarps, certain sizes may become available earlier within the period with other sizes coming later.

- Items that specify "ongoing production" mean that we are continually working on these items and doing our best to maintain inventory. If the item or a particular size is sold out, you can expect it to likely become available soon.

- Please note that you can change the month shown on the calendar using the arrows at the top.

Rigging

Availability
