Designed for Movement

The new, 3rd generation of the Sassafras provides improved fit and comfort, increased performance (especially in vest mode), and more customization options (list of updates).

The Sassafras Fastpack is designed for activities demanding stability and freedom of movement. It syncs with your motions, riding comfortably with minimal bounce over a wide range of loads. Pockets up front provide on-the-go access while the tapered profile keeps the pack out of the way. Every pack is hand sewn, by us, from imported fabrics in our small workshop in Montana.

  • Variable volume from vest to small backpack.
  • Running vest inspired shoulder straps provide comfort and stability.
  • Dual sternum straps provide adjustable securement.
  • Large shoulder strap pockets hold a variety of items.
  • Removable load stabilizers for tweaking weight distribution on the fly.
  • Removable hip stabilizers for tweaking pack carry characteristics.
  • Tapered shape follows the form of the body.
  • On-the-fly trekking pole stashing (optional).
  • Zippered hydration/stash sleeve (optional).
  • Zippered side pocket provides a secure place to store keys and wallet (optional).
  • Removable hip belt w/ daisy chain for modular accessory options.
  • Pack body fabric made from recycled materials.

Versatile Configurations

The Sassafras offers a range of configurations. Dial it in for your long trail run one day and take it out for your lightweight backpacking trip the next weekend.

For example, a great weekend for us might mean backpacking to camp on Friday so we can spend Saturday trail running deep in the mountains. With the Sassafras, we can hike to camp, then collapse the pack into a running vest for the next day's adventure.

The pack body’s volume adjusts from as little as about 4 L, to as much as 30 L (~38 L including the exterior pockets). The tapered width and thickness follow the body’s form, narrower and thinner towards the base, and thicker around the chest for a more natural weight distribution and feel.

Made in the USA from imported materials.

Weight

Load recommendations
  • Max. load recommendation: <30 lbs | ~14 kg
  • Ideal load recommendation: 15-22 lbs | 7-10 kg
Environmental
  • Landfill Waste: TBD
(Amount of in-house waste produced during manufacturing.)

How to estimate the weight

NOTE: Some of the weight information shown is estimated and pending verification.

The Sassafras typically weighs around 21 - 27 oz (600 - 765 g) as shipped. To estimate the weight of your pack, follow the instructions & graphic below.

  • 0 - Starting weight: Start with 18.94 oz (375 g). This is the lowest possible weight of the pack (not including the hip belt, but including the other removable items).
  • 1 - Pack Fabric: Choose your pack fabric. If a weight addition is shown, add this to the starting weight.
  • 2 - Shoulder Strap Pockets: Choose the fabric for your shoulder straps. If a weight addition is shown, add this to the weight.
  • 3 - Main/Side Pockets: Choose style and fabric for the main & side pockets on the pack body. If a weight addition is shown, add this to the weight.
  • 4 - Pockitos: Choose how many Pockitos you'd like (up to 4) and multiply this by the weight shown. Add this to the weight.
  • 5 - Options: Total the weights for the options you'd like. Add this to the weight.
  • 6 - Hip Belt: Identify your hip belt size and this to the weight.
  • Estimated Weight: You should now have the estimated weight of the pack.

Please understand that this is just an estimate and the actual finished weight may vary. Some considerations that are not accounted for here include:

  • Shoulder strap size - Shoulder strap lengths are selected based on your body measurements. Weight shown is based on an average length. Weight discrepancy should be quite small.
  • Material mismatches - Pocket Style B gives you the option to match the shoulder strap material/color with the side pockets. If you do this, AND you end up with a mix of EPX70 and EPX200 in your pack, then the weight estimate will be thrown off a small amount.

If the graphic below doesn't work, or is too small, please see the TEXT VERSION.

Materials

Sizing Information

Use the guide below to measure your torso length, natural waist, and chest.

Within one week of placing your pre-order, please provide us with this information using the 'Customization/Sizing Form'. We'll use this information to build your Sassafras pack to best fit your body.

Size Limits

BEFORE YOU ORDER
Please make sure that your measurements fall within the ranges shown. If you are near the limits, contact us with your measurements for review prior to ordering. Note that our highest confidence for a good fit happens around a torso length of 17-19", Chest size of 33-37", and natural waist of 28-34".

  • Torso length: 16" to 22"
  • Chest: 31" - 42"
  • Natural waist: 27" - 41"

How to take the measurements

You'll get the best measurements with the help of a friend, but you can still get decent measurements on your own. Just take your time and take the measurements a few times to average the results.

Torso Length:

The distance along your spine from the C7 vertebra to the level of your iliac crest.

  1. Tilt your head forward and find the bony protrusion at the base of your neck. This is your C7 vertebra.
  2. Place your hands on your the top of your hips (iliac crest) with your thumbs pointed horizontally toward your back.
  3. Run a string along your spine from the level of your thumbs to the C7 vertebra.
  4. Measure the length of the string to determine your torso length.
Chest:

The distance around the fullest part of your chest.

  1. Stand up straight with your arms by your sides.
  2. Wrap a string or fabric tape measure around your chest at its widest point, a little below your armpits. This is usually over the nipples and across the shoulder blades.
  3. Breathe normally and try to keep the tape parallel to the ground.
  4. Measure the string or note the distance on the tape measure for your chest measurement.
NEW - Strap measurement:

The distance from the middle of your shoulder blade on your back, up over your shoulder, and down to the bottom of your ribcage.

  1. Stand up straight. With one arm reached over your opposite shoulder, find a spot around the middle of your shoulder blade.
  2. From this location, run as string or fabric tape measure over your shoulder and down to the bottom of your ribcage. More specifically, run it to about where you'd like the bottom of your shoulder strap to sit.
  3. Measure the string or note the distance on the tape measure for your strap measurement.
Natural waist:

The distance around your torso at its narrowest point.

  1. Bend side-to-side to see where your body creases. This should be above the hips but below the ribcage.
  2. Measure the distance around your body at this level to determine your natural waist.

What to expect

As a fastpacking pack, the Sassafras may behave a bit differently from more traditional packs.

  • As a fastpacking pack, the Sassafras is designed to distribute weight evenly on the body rather than transferring weight to the hips. Transferring weight to the hips would create a pivot point about the hips and throw off your balance when running. When hiking with a fully loaded Sassafras, you should get limited load transfer to the hips resulting from the structure provided by the contents of your pack.
  • You may find that the Sassafrass has a tendency to ride higher than you're used to. This is most prevalent when the pack is fairly empty (used as a hydration pack) and/or when you're running with it. In the former case, it's because you've tightened down the shoulder straps to snug up the fit. In the later case, it's because during running, the pack unweights which causes the hip belt to lift off the hips. You tighten the hip belt to compensate, and it will naturally nest in the waist rather than on the hips. While users tend to notice this, it doesn't seem to bother them and should be expected with any pack (with a hip belt) when running. The hip belt's primary function is for load stabilization and additional functionality.
  • Most people find that the Sassafras's ideal use case is found when it's loaded to ~15 - 22, with a mix of hiking and running. This sweet spot is where the pack truly excels.
  • A less obvious method for dialing in your pack's fit is to loosen the sternum straps so that you can tighten the shoulder straps. Inversely, if you feel that the pack is riding too high, try loosening the shoulder straps and tightening the sternum straps to compensate.
  • Don't forget the load & hip stabilizers! Adjusting these in conjunction with other tweaks will affect how the pack feels. Start with them loosened, then tighten them as desired after you've made other adjustments.

We're in the process of making new videos for the updated Sassafras. Please check back.

Product Availability

Unless otherwise stated, if the item is available to add to your cart, then it is in-stock and available to ship. Please see the shipping tab for expected fulfillment times.

If the item is marked as "sold out" or "available to backorder" then please refer to the production calendar and the FAQ below for more information.

Q: What is the "Inactive Product" Category?

A: Products in the "Inactive Product" category are not expected to be available any time soon. While I intend to offer them again, they are 'on-hold' indefinitely so that we can focus attention on other products.

Q: Why is so much stuff sold out?!

A: Our capacity is very limited, and we can't make products nearly quickly enough to meet demand. We only sell what I have in-stock, and don't typically take backorders. I know this can make it hard for you to plan, but in the longer term, it should help us to grow and to serve you better in the long term. See the last question for more info about this.

Q: When can I expect the item I'm interested in to become available?

A: For most items, please refer to the production calendar at the bottom of this page. This calendar shows when I expect to work on more substantial products. For some accessory products, production may not always be scheduled in advance and availability may be unpredictable.

FYI: If you do not see the item that you are interested in, then I do not know when it may become available (I don't have a private schedule beyond what's shown!).

Q: Can I pre-order, back-order, or reserve an item?

A: I'm afraid not. Out of fairness to everyone, I don't make special arrangements to reserve products. On rare occasions, I may open a product up for back-ordering to everyone (or a new product for pre-ordering). When this happens, it's made available to order on the website. If you are signed up for the stock notification, you will receive a notice that the item is available to order.

Q: Can you let me know when the item becomes available?

A: Yes. On the product page, enter your email address in the space provided to be automatically notified when inventory becomes available. If you don't see where you can do this, please let me know; sometimes there's a fluke in the settings and the field doesn't show. Please note that the email notification could get filtered out as spam. You can try to 'whitelist' info@yamamountaingear.com to make sure the email comes through.

Q: Why do you do things this way, and what are you doing to improve the situation?

A: For years I followed the more common back-order model, basically making everything to order. This approach made it challenging to increase production, limited time available to design new products or refine existing ones, impacted my personal/outdoor time, and meant long waits to get your gear delivered. I changed my approach when I moved to Montana in 2019. Offering only what's already made allows me to work and plan more efficiently, and opens up hiring opportunities.

It's come to our attention that the calendar is not showing our updates (not sure how long this has been a problem.) Thanks for your patience while we work to resolve the issue. Note that for the end of July, we have Bug Shelters in the works. For early August, we have Bug Canopies coming and more y-zip Bug Bivys through August. We'll also be working to fulfill Sassafras pre-orders through August into September.

NOTES ON USING THE CALENDAR

- For products shown on the calendar, you can typically expect the item to be made available towards the end, or soon after the period shown on the calendar. Sometimes, however, some items may be listed earlier in the period. For example, if the calendar shows that I'm working on tapered tarps, certain sizes may become available earlier within the period with other sizes coming later.

- Items that specify "ongoing production" mean that we are continually working on these items and doing our best to maintain inventory. If the item or a particular size is sold out, you can expect it to likely become available soon.

- Please note that you can change the month shown on the calendar using the arrows at the top.
